Sonoma Retreat

Conceived as a garden pavilion complimenting an existing contemporary guest house, this home was designed to respond to the rugged, remote, and beautiful landscape.

Countering the strong axis formed by a large pool, the building is composed of three forms: a zinc-clad services core extending along the north side, floor to ceiling structural glass at three sides of the building perimeter and a razor thin roof supported on a series of poles. With a symmetrical plan and glass walls on three sides, the main floor living spaces connect to extensive gardens actively maintained by the owners. Two monolithic concrete forms at the East and West sides of the main floor provide structure for the upper floor while anchoring the building to the site.

The upper floor includes an office / guest room and a master bedroom flanking a large bathroom and central stair. These spaces are defined by a sloping ceiling plane with exposed structure at the building exterior that highlights views of the valley and Mt. St. Helena beyond. With a quiet simplicity of form and a minimalist material palette, this home compliments the existing structures and the powerful landscape.
