Belvedere Retreat

Longtime residents of Belvedere, an island community overlooking San Francisco’s northern edge, the clients approached Feldman Architecture looking to simplify and modernize their lives and immerse themselves in the surrounding visual beauty of their newly acquired undeveloped double lot. Unlike other Belvedere parcels, the unique property offered space to not only enjoy the beautiful 270 degree views of San Francisco, the East Bay, and Marin County, but also allowed for their future home to be pushed back from the street, introducing a verdant garden enveloping a secluded entryway- elevating privacy levels and creating multiple outdoor living spaces.

The completely new home is designed to sit aligned from east to west; many of the rooms are thoughtfully angled towards the San Francisco Bay, offering views of the dramatic skyline, often draped in fog. The building itself will act as a delicately placed threshold between the westward bay view and the lush garden, offering two separate and distinct inspirational moments for visitors and inhabitants alike.

The clients had a strong programmatic vision as we embarked on the design process, resulting in a dynamic relationship. We were charged with building a new structure from the ground up- a comprehensive, modern, simple, forever home. A thoughtfully designed, spacious kitchen for an avid chocolate maker, a tranquil outdoor pool and lounge perched above the bay, and a customized space for the clients’ diving gear are a few of the personal details integrated into the new home’s layout.
