Fall is here in San Francisco! This season, as we continue to grow our practice, we aim to welcome more workplace and hospitality projects onto the boards- integrating our residential aesthetic into our commercial designs. This newsletter will highlight a few FA commercial projects we particularly love- featuring some unpublished, never before seen photos as well as unfinished projects. In the Presidio VC Offices, photographed by Paul Dyer, a green living wall connects the space to the nature that surrounds it, and communal, softly lit seating in the living room provides casual meeting spaces for guests and employees alike.

dosa by DOSA, photographed by Kassie Borreson, brings the energetic warmth and spirit of Mumbai street food to the easy-going Uptown Oakland neighborhood. We took full advantage of high ceilings and abundant natural light in the century-old, brick-and-timber building; hand-crafted interpretations of traditional Indian elements play with new and old and welcome guests into the heart of the kitchen. We would like to congratulate the dosa team’s recent success- their delicious fresh fare is now available in Whole Foods.

Engine Company No. 8 is one of our personal favorite workplace renovations (don’t worry, we aren’t biased). The open concept design studio is punctuated with crisp white bookshelves and modern detailing, which stand in contrast with the fire house’s original weathered bones and exposed steel beams (the original structure was built in 1907). Recess lighting accentuates white wooden panels sprinkled with our firm’s recent work, revealing the rough brick above and below, and creating a softly lit, warm atmospheric mood often found in our homes. We love our studio…if you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by!

The Salesforce Tower Office Space, photographed by Paul Dyer, soars high above San Francisco, but is anchored by a gently curving wood wrapped core which shapes the office’s circulation and houses private meeting rooms. Like a home, the plan creates a gradient from open gathering spaces to private retreats, and maintains casual public lounges accessible to all employees and clients.

This Fall, we have several commercial projects On the Boards, including Copeland Park Properties, a family owned, full service property investment and Management Company looking for a headquarters refresh near up-and-coming downtown Burlingame. The rendering above shows the latest design, featuring an exterior clad with vertical wood slats. Along with a few other projects in process, including some initial pro bono design work with the San Francisco Community Health Center, we are looking forward to an exciting fall!

his July, the FA team visited the recently completed Surf House, which went through an epic journey with the Santa Cruz coastal commission due to its close proximity to ocean (the house is only 50 feet from some of CA’s best waves). A photo shoot with Commune Design, the interior designers, follows this October, more to come!

And finally, we are honored to welcome our newest American citizen, Anjali Iyer! This summer, FA architect Anjali passed the test and gained her American citizenship, and we are so proud. We will continue to deeply admire her amazing work ethic and impeccable eye for design- and in her honor, we hosted an America themed trivia and feast celebration. We are looking forward to a happy, healthy, and productive fall, and wish you the same.
