19-025 Pacific Multiuse

Our clients at 1650 Pacific Avenue were looking to transform a two story commercial storefront with a historic façade into a modern multiuse building, challenging our designers to craft a clean and simple design that not only preserves a historic building, but also seamlessly connects a modern addition stylistically, functionally, and beautifully.

1650 Pacific Avenue, originally an auto repair shop, was designed and built by O-Brien Brothers architects in 1921 and is part of the historic Van Ness Auto Row. The two-story Tudor Rival-style garage originally had three-bay windows and reinforced concrete - providing a strong and sturdy base for our project.

The updated design wraps around a central core - acting as a structural spine, as well as an access point that residents and visitors will use to access every level of the building, culminating in a communal roof deck with sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. Glassy units facing north will open up onto private terraces overlooking the bay, and units facing towards Pacific Avenue flaunt protective screens to ensure privacy, while maintaining a visual connection to the surrounding neighborhood.
